WHAT IS SPORT?
WHAT IS SPORT? OBJECTIVES By the end of this booklet you should be able to:- 1] Write a definition for SPORT 2] Make a list of different types of Sports classifications. 3] Further split these classifications into Sports categories in relation to key abilities and skills. DEFINE SPORT The word sport is used so often that we find it not an easy word to define. WRITE DOWN YOUR DEFINITION OF "WHAT IS SPORT?" We know that cricket, netball, hockey, football are sports. However, are camping, hunting and wind-surfing sports? Is touch rugby a sport? When a school pupil plays continuous cricket, is it a sport? One method of solving the difficulty of defining sport is to distinguish between play, recreation, games and sport. When considering GAMES remember we only consider active physical activities and not games such as cards, chess, computer software, etc. Read pages 115 117 "Fundamentals of Health and P.E." PLAY - Write down the 5 definitions of play. Summarise and give examples. RECREATION - Write down the 2 definitions of GAMES. Summarise and give examples. GAMES - Write down the 5 definitions of GAMES. Summarise and give examples. SPORT - Write down the 7 definitions of SPORT. Summarise and give examples. As physical activity moves from play to sport, the following occurs. 1] Physical activity becomes less spontaneous and more controlled by rules. 2] Individuals put in more effort and time in learning skills, preparing tactics and playing to win. 3] Spectators become more evident and involved. 4] The rewards involve personal enjoyment and gaining awards, prizes and recognition DIFFERENT TYPES OF SPORTS CLASSIFICATIONS
Now that you have a clear definition of the word sport. Can you now classify different types of sport? WRITE DOWN A LIST OF CLASSIFICATIONS TO IDENTIFY DIFFERENT TYPES OF SPORTS. E.G. - INDOOR -- OUTDOOR (ADD MORE TO THIS EXAMPLE)
