TELEVISION AND SPORT

During our leisure time we have the choice of watching television or playing sport. In this situation, sport and television are in direct competition. However, television has done much to help the development of sport.

Since 1927 the BBC has broadcast radio commentaries on the major sporting events such as the Boat Race, Grand National, Wimbledon, Test Matches and F.A. Cup Finals.

Some sports such as show jumping, darts and snooker owe their present popularity to the exposure they receive on television.

NEWSPAPER/MAGAZINES AND SPORT

Most newspapers include a sports section which contains reports of events, comments, sports news and articles. Although many articles are factual and descriptive some rely on sensationalism and try to sell the paper.

CAN YOU THINK OF ANY EXAMPLES OF THIS RECENTLY IN OUR NATIONAL PRESS?

Some sports writers have been criticised for both building up sports stars and teams and then pulling them apart when they have failed. There is no doubt that sports writers have a great deal of influence on the opinions of sports fans.
